Champions League – Atletico Madrid-Roma
Atletico Madrid hosts Roma in a match from Group C of the UEFA Champions League.
Atletico Madrid reached the Champions League final two times in the last few years, but this season Diego Simeone’s team dissapoints in the competition. After four rounds of the group stage being played, Atletico have won just 3 points – something which most surely is going to kick them out of the competition. Unless some kind of a miracle doesn’t happen.
In the most unexpected way, Atletico made two draws against the underdog in the group Qarabag. These two results will be the main reason why Atletico most probably will leave the Champions League after the end of the group stage. They still have theoretical chance to finish second in the group, but it’s not very likely.
Now Atletico’s main goal remains fighting with Qarabag for the third place in the group and qualification for Europa League. They surely had higher ambitions in the competition, but in the Champions League every mistake might be fatal. And they are a team which should know this very well.
Roma on the other hand are doing much better. The Italian team is leading the group with 8 points won so far. They are unbeaten in the group and have a record of two wins and two draws. Even a draw in Madrid would be enough to Roma to guarantee a place at the knockout phase of the competition.
Of course, Roma would want to finish first in this group. They have just one point more than Chelsea, who are playing with Qarabag two hours earlier. It’s going to be a fierce battle for the first place, so you can be sure that Roma are going to play with this in mind against Atletico. Finishing first in this tough group would be a massive achievement for the Italian club.
