German Bundesliga – Mainz 05-Stuttgart
Mainz 05 hosts Stuttgart in a game from the opening round of the German Bundesliga. Let’s take a look at it.
Mainz 05 barely survived last season, finishing 14th in the league on just 3 points above the 16th Wolfsburg and the relegation playoff position. It was not a good campaign for Mainz, who continue to be among the teams usually fighting for their survival. We doubt that something is about to change this time. On the contrary, we expect that Mainz will once again be locked in a fight against relegation to the 2. Bundesliga.
This is not a rich club, so on the transfer market Mainz didn’t do much. But they still signed some interesting players, acquiring Oympique Lyonnais’ Jean-Philippe Mateta and Atletico Madrid’s Pierre Kunde. They also loaned Espanyol’s left back Aaron Martin until the end of the season. These players didn’t really make it in their former teams, but who knows – maybe Mainz is the right place for their development?
Stuttgart had a good previous season in the Bundesliga. The former champions finished 7th in the league, being on just 2 points behind the 6th RB Leipzig. They showed good levels and surely they would want to do something similar this season as well. Many people then thought that Stuttgart will fight against relegation, but they did a lot better than this.
On the market Stuttgart made some promising moves, signing Manchester City’s Pablo Maffeo, Borussia Dortmund’s Gonzalo Castro, Argentinos’ striker Nicolas Gonzalesz and Dinamo Zagreb’s talented left back Borna Sosa. Except Castro, all of these are young players, so Stuttgart are clearly planning their future as well.
This is our review of the Bundesliga clash between Mainz 05 and Stuttgart. Based on performance from last season, maybe Stuttgart are a slight favourite here. But let’s see what Stuttgart have to offer.
